All About Facial Implants

Designed to enhance, rejuvenate, and reconstruct facial contours, facial implants come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Most commonly used to add volume to the cheeks, increase the projection of a receding chin, enhance a weak jawline, and smooth under-eye hollows, facial implants offer permanent improvement for facial asymmetry or deficiencies. Because we all have different faces, facial implant surgery is a highly customized procedure. The implants we use are remarkably versatile and come in all shapes and sizes to fit the specific structure of each patient’s unique face. During your consultation with Dr. Bloom or Dr. Shtraks, they will discuss the type and size of implant best suited to your aesthetic goals.

Chin Augmentation With a Chin Implant

While Dr. Bloom and Dr. Shtraks perform facial implant surgery for many different areas of the face, chin augmentation is particularly popular. It is often done in conjunction with rhinoplasty to enhance the appearance of the profile. In chin augmentation, a chin implant is surgically placed to improve a weak or recessed chin. Other areas that can have implants placed are the cheeks, under-eye area, lips, and jaw.

What Can Facial Implants Do for the Face?

  • Add volume to hollow or sunken areas
  • Provide overall “lift” to the face
  • Help a weak chin appear more prominent
  • Enhance the natural cheekbone
  • Sculpt a weak jawline
  • Improve depressions around the chin

Are Facial Implants Right for You?

If you’re in the Bryn Mawr and Philadelphia area and you’re considering facial implants, it may be the ideal surgery for your needs. The best candidates for facial implants:

  • Dislike their recessed chin, weak jawline, thin lips, or lack of cheekbones
  • Have finished facial development
  • Are in general good health and do not smoke
  • Have realistic expectations for what facial implants can accomplish

What Are Facial Implants Made of?

Facial implants are typically made of soft silicone, without any liquid ingredients. They are designed to be compatible with human tissues and to support the bones while also providing the volume that’s needed. Facial implants are engineered to deliver the most natural-looking and natural-feeling results possible.

Procedure & Recovery

Before undergoing facial implant surgery, you will meet with Dr. Bloom or Dr. Shtraks to determine the optimal size and type of facial implants for your aesthetic goals. During your initial meeting, we will discuss your questions, concerns, and desired results. During facial implant surgery, the incisions are hidden under the chin, inside the mouth, or within the lower eyelid so they are nearly invisible once healed, and the procedures themselves are relatively fast.

Facial implants can be used on their own, but Dr. Bloom and Dr. Shtraks may recommend additional facial plastic surgery procedures to optimize facial harmony and bring all of the facial features into proportion.

You can expect swelling and bruising for up to one week, and restricted activity for 4-6 weeks to prevent implants from shifting before adequate healing has taken place.
