PDO thread lift from Bloom Facial Plastic Surgery

The PDO thread lift has been a popular procedure in countries like Asia and Europe for over a decade, and now it’s being done more and more in the U.S. This treatment lifts and tightens loose skin using biodegradable PDO (polydioxanone) or PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) threads, which are “threaded” into the face.

When the threads are tightened, the skin is lifted while, at the same time, new collagen production is triggered. This process results in skin that is firmer, tighter, and more youthful-looking. Because the threads are biodegradable, they dissolve within a few months. However, the collagen network remains.

What areas can a thread lift treat?

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Cheeks
  • Lips/upper lip
  • Neck
  • Chin
  • Under the eyes
  • Jowls/jawline
  • Forehead

What happens during a thread lift?

Your face will be cleansed and then marked to help guide your aesthetician. Lidocaine will be injected to help with any discomfort. Once you’re numb, a small access hole will be made at the entry point to create the “tunnel” for the threading.

Once this has been done, a long, thin cannula that houses the lifting thread will use that entry point to go under the skin so that the thread is placed correctly. The cannula is then pulled out, which leaves the thread in place to engage the tissues. New collagen production is also started. The result of this process is a much more contoured appearance to the treated area. The number of threads used will depend on the amount of treatment you want, and treatment time typically takes 15-30 minutes.

Recovery and results

A PDO thread lift does not require much downtime, and the majority of patients are able to return to their regular activities the following day.We recommend avoiding:

  • Sleeping on your stomach or side (for 5 nights)
  • Wearing makeup (for 12 hours after treatment)
  • Drinking alcohol (for 2 weeks)
  • Smoking (for 14 days)
  • Getting facials/facial massages (for 10 days)
  • Making extreme facial expressions (until we advise)
  • Becoming overheated (until we advise)
  • Strenuous exercise (until we advise)

The most common side effects are mild soreness, mild inflammation, and some bruising. These all dissipate within one week. The lifting effect can be seen instantly — which patients love — but the final rejuvenated results will become visible about one month after your treatment.

PDO thread lift candidates

If you’re interested in a PDO thread lift, we are happy to offer this procedure at the aesthetic center at Bloom Facial Plastic Surgery. The best candidates for this procedure are individuals in their 30s or older who are unhappy with mild to moderate facial sagging. If you have more severe facial sagging, a different procedure will be better for you.
