Meet Dr. Liz Malphrus

Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Malphrus is a highly trained, accomplished surgeon and medical professional, having worked and studied at some of the most elite institutions in the country. Her work has been shared in over a dozen peer-reviewed publications, and prior to completing her medical degree, she became the youngest-ever study director at the National Academy of Sciences, authoring a landmark 300-page study on healthcare measurement. Dr. Malphrus’s experience puts her at the forefront of her field, and she’s dedicated to bringing her world-class results to patients in Bryn Mawr.

She has lectured at prestigious conferences and co-authored two books on healthcare policy and surgical education. The NESPS Best Paper Award recognized her research on PennMicro, a training framework she helped develop to accelerate microsurgical skill acquisition outside the operating room.

An Elite Education

Dr. Malphrus began her career as a musician, joining the Manhattan School of Music's conservatory for violin performance in 2007. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University in 2011.

From there, her path took her to Washington, D.C., where she worked in science policy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Amgen Pharmaceuticals, before joining the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences. She completed a Master's in Science Policy at Georgetown University before pursuing medicine full-time.

In May 2020, Dr. Malphrus earned her doctorate from George Washington University, graduating at the top of her class and earning a place in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She completed her Integrated Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania and joined Bloom Facial Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery after graduation.

Advancing the Field of Plastic Surgery

Her research spans the underrecognized role of menopause in surgical outcomes, microsurgical education, pediatric reconstruction, and gender-affirming care. She has co-authored two books, including Vital Signs: Core Metrics for Health and Health Care Progress, published by the National Academy of Sciences, and delivered Grand Rounds lectures at the University of Pennsylvania on labiaplasty and surgical performance measurement. At the 2024 CHA Annual Conference, she presented original research on liquid genioplasty.

Putting Patients First

Dr. Malphrus's patient philosophy is built on a core belief that aesthetic care should be fun, empowering, and educational. Her goal is to help people make the best decisions they can for themselves, and she's committed to providing patients with all the resources they need to make an informed, confident decision.

In addition to speaking one-on-one with patients, she shares surgical knowledge on social media, extending her reach to patients still researching their options. In 2025, that commitment to accurate, accessible education earned her the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Social Media Award in the Education Category.

Life Outside the OR

Dr. Malphrus lives in Philadelphia, PA, with her husband and cat, Louis, and has become a true part of Philly's vibrant community since beginning her residency at UPenn. She enjoys trying new local restaurants and taking group fitness classes, and she's always ready for a spontaneous visit to one of the city's stunning museums. On weekends, she often hops on the train to NYC or catches a flight for a getaway with friends and family. When she's not exploring the city, Dr. Malphrus enjoys baking, reading fiction, and tending to her collection of houseplants. A self-proclaimed nerd, she often spends her Saturdays lost in a jigsaw puzzle and listening to podcasts.
